KMK is proud to introduce the new Part 1, 11th Edition textbook that includes the most up to date and clinically relevant information in optometry. Led by KMK’s Chief Medical Editor, Dr. Kendra Dalton, this textbook includes significant updates in the Systemic Disease and Ocular Disease chapters.
According to the NBEO® Part 1 matrix available on the NBEO® website, Ocular Disease and Systemic Disease questions are under the main category of Microbiology/Immunology/Pathology. Based on estimates provided by the NBEO®, Ocular Disease and Systemic Disease questions make up approximately 92% of the total questions in this main category, or 25% of the overall Part 1 exam! In order to better prepare students to tackle the challenging questions within these sections, the Part 1, 11th edition has been updated with new information in the Systemic Disease and Ocular Disease chapters.
Systemic Disease can be challenging to study for many students because of the breadth of information included in the chapter. Our team encourages students to study this subject effectively by focusing on systemic diseases with associated ocular manifestations. In order to help students achieve this goal, the Part 1, 11th edition Systemic Disease chapter has been updated with new information related to the most important systemic diseases with significant ocular complications. These updates are organized in a new format that we hope will make it easier for students to understand and remember all of the ocular issues associated with each systemic disease.
In addition to updating the ocular complications associated with disease, the Systemic Disease chapter also includes new, clinically relevant information regarding the diagnosis, work up, and treatment for several significant systemic diseases that we may encounter in clinic. The new definition and treatment guidelines for hypertension, published by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology in 2017, have been included in the Part 1, 11th edition in order to provide students with the most recent information regarding hypertension. The Systemic Disease chapter also includes descriptions of new tests recommended by the CDC for the diagnosis of systemic diseases, including IgG enzyme immunoassays for the diagnosis of syphilis and blood interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) such as QuantiFERON® TB Gold In-Tube test for the diagnosis of tuberculosis. In order to help students establish a more solid foundation for genetic systemic diseases and inheritance patterns, the Part 1, 11th edition has been updated with thorough descriptions of the genetics of autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, and sex-linked genetic anomalies.
It is crucial for students to dominate Ocular Disease, not only to successfully pass boards, but also to become excellent doctors who provide exceptional care to patients. Our team understands how daunting Ocular Disease can seem to many of our students because of the wide range and depth of information they must assimilate into a clinical framework that can then be applied to the treatment of patients. We also understand that repetition is key for students to build a solid foundation of knowledge. With this in mind, the Part 1, 11th edition contains significant updates to the Ocular Disease chapter that are designed to improve the organization of the material to make studying easier and more enjoyable for students! These updates also help to better integrate the Ocular Disease chapter into the other components of our Part 1 course, including Part 1 videos, Precise Practice questions, and Flashcards. We hope that enhancing the integration of the Part 1, 11th edition textbook with the other core components of the Part 1 KMK course will simplify studying for students, and hammer home the most clinically relevant concepts for boards and future patient care.
The new KMK Part 1, 11th Edition is included with the KMK Part 1 Core course, the KMK Plus package, and the KMK Signature® Coaching course.
