KMK is thrilled to introduce the new Part 2, 7th Edition textbook that includes the latest advancements in optometry.  Led by KMK’s Chief Medical Editor, Dr. Kendra Dalton, this textbook includes significant updates to cases in the Disease/Trauma section and Refractive/Sensory/Oculomotor section, as well as updates within the Pharmacology chapter.

The Disease/Trauma section accounts for 60-70% of case items on the Part 2 exam.  In order to better prepare students to tackle challenging cases with confidence, the cases within the Disease/Trauma section in the Part 2, 7th edition have been updated with new information to increase the difficulty level and to improve the flow of information to streamline studying.  Results from the latest clinically relevant ophthalmology studies have been added to the Disease/Trauma section, as well as new guidelines for testing for systemic diseases, including syphilis testing, tuberculosis testing, and diagnosis and treatment of hypertension.

Cases within the Refractive/Sensory/Oculomotor section in this new edition have been streamlined to improve the organization of the information.  A significant amount of new information has also been added to these cases in order to provide a more complete review of major subjects in this section, including contact lenses, color vision, vision and human development, physiological optics, and binocular vision.

The Contact Lens chapter includes updated information on contact lens parameters and fitting guidelines.  The Visual Perception chapter includes new information on the different types of color vision defects, as well as a description of how to administer and interpret color vision tests.  The Vision and Human Development chapter contains new cognitive, motor, emotional, and language developmental milestones and a description of the major developmental tests.  This chapter has also been updated with a detailed description of visual perception tests, including how to administer the test, behaviors to observe and record that may influence scoring for the tests, and the types of errors that are scored for drawing and writing tests.  The visual perception tests that are reviewed include the Piaget right-left awareness test, Jordan left-right reversal test, Test of Visual Perceptual Skills (TVPS), Developmental Test of Visual Perception (DTVP), Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (Beery-VMI), Motor Free Perception test (MVPT), Wold Sentence Copy test, and Test of Visual Motor Skills (TVMS).  Essential updates to the Physiological Optics chapter include different methods for determining Add power and new ANSI standards.  The Binocular Vision chapter also includes important updates regarding different types of nystagmus, methods for calculating AC/A, and Morgan’s norms.

Mastering pharmacology is not only important for passing Part 2, but also for passing the TMOD exam embedded within the Part 2 exam.  This new edition contains significant updates to the pharmacology chapter to help students dominate TMOD.  Critical updates to the Pharmacology chapter include information on how to safely administer and treat potential side effects from injections, 2015 FDA guidelines for prescribing medications to pregnant and/or lactating women and prescription drug labeling, and the 2016 American Academy of Ophthalmology guidelines for screening for hydroxychloroquine macular toxicity.

The new KMK Part 2, 7th Edition is included with the KMK Plus+ package and KMK Signature® Coaching course.
