In talking to Optometry students across the country, we know you’re busier than ever before.  We remember the stress of just trying to keep up with the normal class schedule and exams – when you add boards prep to everything else, it can feel overwhelming to many students. We are excited to help!

Let’s be honest.  No matter how busy life gets, we all love to kill some time each day on our favorite social media platforms.  And it’s amazing how 5-10 minutes a day of scrolling through each platform gets you up to speed quickly on what’s happening in the areas of the world that you care about.  And it’s fun and easy (I call it “passive learning”) and we all do it. Why not use this habit to our advantage in boards prep?  Welcome to KMK TYK powered by Twitter®!

#KMKTYK is a series of questions curated by KMK’s Chief Medical Editor, Dr. Kendra Null, that are posted on Twitter® for students across the world.  These questions are designed to help you TYK = Test Your Knowledge so you can feel confident about what you are learning as you go through the KMK Part 1 course.  From June through August and October through March prior to the Part 1 NBEO® exam, #KMKTYK questions are posted twice per week.  KMK sends a notification through Instagram® that the #KMKTYK questions are live on Twitter®.  The questions are posted on an online voting platform, which means you get 24 hours to vote for which answer you think is correct!  Approximately 24 hours after the Twitter® poll has closed, the polling results are posted on Instagram® and Twitter®.  Make sure you turn on post notifications in Instagram® so you can see the polling results as soon as they are available!

The polling results available on Instagram® and Twitter® show the percentage of students across the globe who voted for a particular answer.  It’s important to remember that these polling results DO NOT necessarily display the correct answer for you!!  The majority of students may agree on a particular answer that is actually the wrong answer to the question – make sure you read the explanation for the question that is also posted on Instagram® and Twitter® so you know the correct answer to the question!

As we get closer to the exam, #KMKTYK enters into what KMK calls the RevUp® phase.  At this point, you are beyond phase 1 of the study plan – you have already built a solid FOUNDATION of knowledge by going through the online HD videos, the KMK Part 1 review textbook, and the flashcards.  #KMKTYK RevUp® is designed to help you through Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the KMK Part 1 study plan.

What is Phase 2 and Phase 3?

Phase 2 is all about STRETCHING your knowledge – it’s time to connect and integrate concepts that you have learned across multiple subject areas.  You already know that what you learn in ocular anatomy ties into ocular physiology, and ocular anatomy and ocular physiology tie into ocular disease, and ocular pharmacology and general pharmacology tie into ocular disease.  Phase 2 helps you connect the dots between the key facts so you can form a big picture that you can apply to your patients in clinic.  Phase 3 gets you EXAM READY and makes sure you are rock solid on your knowledge so you can dominate the Part 1 NBEO® exam.  Boards are challenging because they present you with questions that are in different subject areas (you have an anatomy question, then a physiological optics question, then an immunology question), and they can test your knowledge of a single concept by asking questions in a different way than what you may have seen in the past.

During the #KMKTYK Rev Up® period, the questions posted on Twitter® become more difficult and are derived from a KMK advanced course, including the Booster Course® series and the KMK Crash Course [Part 1].  These questions require you to connect concepts across multiple subject areas (STRETCHING your knowledge) and ask concepts in different ways to get you EXAM READY.  Just as before, #KMKTYK questions are posted twice per week during the RevUp® phase so you can keep your momentum going into the exam.
